Learning Ruby on Rails

As I mentioned in my last post on Strict XHTML coding, I’m working intensely on three specific websites at the moment. Working on only one would probably have been best, but I know from experience that I get bored if I work on a single website for too long. Anyway, the goal is that the income generated by those sites attains a certain level, so that I can self-finance my first bootstrap start-up. I already have two ideas for this first start-up. Nothing revolutionary, just things that will allow me to use my creative juices and dabble in the start-up world. Well, start-up is perhaps a big word – but I’m aiming at launching a self-created web application, and go through the processes, in a micro sized version, involved in creating, running and then eventually (hopefully) selling a start-up.

As such, I’ve decided to learn Ruby on Rails. It is a popular programming language for web applications nowadays, and it looks like a fun language. I haven’t learned a new programming language in years, but after reading a little about it, I’m confident I’ll be able to reach a basic level in a relatively short period of time.

I’m also kind of excited. Back when I was doing my Comp. Eng. degree, programming and learning how to program was always something I enjoyed. To learn Ruby on Rails, I’ve decided to go with the Ruby on Rails Tutorials website. I will only be getting the ebook. The ebook is actually available for free on the website, but the downloadable version is $26. Given that I plan on studying during my commute to and from work (I work a full time 9to5 job), I’ll need to purchase it.

At the moment, I only have a BlackBerry, so I’m debating between getting a Kindle or an iPad. I actually almost bought one or the other a couple months ago, but couldn’t make my mind up. I guess I didn’t really need one. But now that I do, I guess it’s back to reading the various comparisons and reviews floating on the Net.
